Motor Show taken to new heights

The performance zone at the 2006 National Motor Show will be literally taken to new heights with freestyle motorcross (FMX) demonstrations.

The FMX Zone team includes some of New Zealand’s best Freestyle Motor Cross riders, seen at events like Crusty Demons of Dirt, Freestyle Sports Open and Big Day Out.

“With so much experience these riders are guaranteed to put on an impressive stunt show,” demonstrations coordinator Amie Woods said.

And FMX Zone co-coordinator Lawrence Perkins said the team will “be putting on a spectacular display with some of the craziest extreme sports action you will ever see/”

Miss Woods said this year the Performance Zone will be an exciting place to be.

“We have over doubled the amount of action that will be on show.  If you like extreme demonstrations then we have it for you.”

On the ground, but creating just as much impact will be Mark Holland and his Blue Thunder Racing Team heating up the burnout strip. Holland was a hit at the 2005 show and promises more quality burnouts for 2006.

Also back by popular demand is the American jet car Warhawk which will be bringing plenty of smoke and fire.

While Warhawk won’t be in true race action at the Motor Show (that requires full track conditions), its ability to do 450kms in six seconds over a quarter-mile commands some serious attention, Miss Woods said.

The four-wheel drive team will be demonstrating adjacent to the burnout strip, but will definitely not be on dry land.

Water, mud, hills, trenches and “a couple of ‘sidlings’” will guarantee a great show for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts at the event.

Four-wheel drive coordinator Archie Griffin said that “plenty of revs and wheel-spinning” will ensure it’s a must-see for visitors at the event.

Six vehicles will be coordinated for 45-minute demonstrations held throughout the three-day event. All demonstrations will be fully commentated and will take place on a purpose-built course at Mystery Creek Events Centre.

The team of professional drivers include current number-one female driver Linda Griffin in a four-cylinder. The other 4WD vehicles in the demonstration will be a mixture of four-cylinder and 5.7-litre super-modified V8 Lexus-powered Landcruisers.

The Motor Show performance zone is in the heart of the show complete with grandstand seating for ‘X” people. Entry to the zone is free as part of Motor Show entry - $12 adults, $5 children (up to 15-years) and under-5s free. See www.nzmotorshow.co.nzfor details.

Ends.
